A stand-up view of marriage, motherhood & life

I Just Can’t Stop Myself…

Hi, my name’s Maryellen Hooper and I’m a birthday party over-doer. It’s been 10 hours since my last birthday craft. I really thought I had it under control this time. My last binge was just 6 days ago. I was back on the store-bought wagon, when I remembered the Montessori birthday celebration they have for your child in the classroom. We’re asked to bring a snack for the class. Then some other over-doers started bringing a “goody bag” for each child to bring home at the end of the day. But I promised myself I wouldn’t over-do it anymore. Less is more, less is more…

So I went to the grocery store and bought a bowl of PRECUT fruit for the snack. I wasn’t even going to cut it. It would be too tempting to cut the pieces into cool shapes. But it was just sitting there in the bowl. It was so, so plain. It was downright pitiful. The fruit started screaming at me for a make-over. NO! I’m not getting sucked into the  crafty, over-do-it thing again. But, I could just jab a stick thru the fruit. That wouldn’t be considered crafty. That would be helpful! No forks needed. I would be saving the planet!

I bought Tootsie Pops for Nate to give out at the end of the day. Easy. Done. But every time I passed the bowl of uninspired, store-bought pops, I heard them taunting me:

“Psssst… Hey, you’re not REALLY going to send your son to school with a boring bowl of lollypops are you?”

“Yes. Yes I am.”

“But that’s not creative…we thought you were creative.”

“I AM creative…but I’m tired. I just made 17 capes for crying-out-loud! Get off my back, man…”

“Don’t you love your son?”

“WHAT?!!!  STOP IT!!!! I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE…SOMEONE, GO GET ME THE GLUE GUN!!!”

Admitting you have a problem is half the battle, right?
